Rabindra University, Academy in Bangladesh

A Rabindra University and a Rabindra Academy will be established in Bangladesh for higher studies and research on Rabindranath Tagore, the prime minister has said.

In addition, the government is thinking of building a Bangladesh Bhaban in India's West Bengal for accommodation of Bangladeshi students studying in Shantiniketan, Sheikh Hasina said.

She was speaking at the first meeting of the national committee on observation of Tagore's 150th birth anniversary at her office on Tuesday.

Hasina directed all relevant officials to take necessary steps to make the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath, to be held on May 7 next year, successful.

The prime minister's press secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters about these developments after the meeting.

The prime minister also said necessary financial allocations will also be provided to the cultural organisations as well as various government programmes to observe the birth anniversary with due respect, her press secretary said.

During the meeting, it was also decided to form a working committee, led by the culture minister, to coordinate the programmes.

Culture minister Abul Kalam Azad and members of the national committee consisting of poets, writers, educationists, artists and artistes, intellectuals were present.

The 156-strong committee, led by Hasina, was formed on Aug 12. India and Bangladesh decided to jointly observe the anniversary during the prime minister's January 2009 visit in New Delhi.
