HC Verdict on Dhaka Rivers Wednesday
Wednesday, 06 October 2010

The High Court has set Wednesday for issuing the verdict on a government petition, requesting two more years for eviction of illegal constructions on the four rivers adjacent to Dhaka.

The High Court bench of justices Syed Mahmud Hossain and Gobinda Chandra Tagore set the date on Tuesday.

The High Court on June 25, 2009 ordered the government to clear out garbage, sand, soil and other things that obstruct natural river flow of the Buriganga, Turag, Shitalakkhya and Balu rivers by Nov 30, 2010 following a writ petition filed by the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

On Jan 24, the High Court ordered to demolish all illegal constructions on the rivers following another petition by the organisation.

Attorney general Mahbubey Alam, during the hearing on Tuesday, said the government has taken many steps in this regard. "But more time will be needed to implement the verdict."

Lawyer Manjil Morshed stood for the organisation in the hearing.
