The government has planned to develop the Narayanganj river port to an international standard container port, the shipping minister has said.

Shajahan Khan said on Tuesday: "In line with the agreements with India, Chittagong and Mongla seaports and Narayanganj and Patuakhali river ports are underway to be developed."

He was speaking to reporters after visiting the construction works of a port by Bangladesh Inland Water transport Authority (BIWTA) at Khanpur.

Besides, production at the currently shut fibre glass factory of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) will resume soon under the public-private partnership initiative, the minister added.

High officials of BIWTA, BIWTC and district administration accompanied the minister.
