Leaves of all Water Development Board officials and engineers have been cancelled as the government grapples with worsening flooding across the country.

The officials have been asked to stay at their workplaces until the situation improves, water resources minister Ramesh Chandra Sen told at his office on Sunday.

According to the WDB's latest data until 10am on Sunday, water level of Jamuna at Bahadurabad, Sirajganj and Aricha points; Padma at Goalonda and Bhagyakul; Arialkhan in Madaripur; Kushiara at Amashid, Sheola and Sherpur, and Surama river at Kanaighat are flowing over danger-level.

Kushiara is flowing at highest 117cm over danger-level at Amalshid and 13cm in Sherpur.

Sen said there has been huge rain this year due to low over Bay, which has resulted to flood in many districts including those in Rangpur division.

"Flood situation is not alarming, rather improvement has been seen in different parts of the country," he claimed.

Officials have been ordered to take immediate steps in a bid to prevent further erosion, he said.

"Funds have been allocated to the chief engineers in every area. Strict measures will be taken against those neglecting duties," the minister added.

On renovation of embankments and prevention of erosion, Sen said, "The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council has already approved 32 projects, while 20 more will soon be placed."
