Activists Urge RMG Workers' Pay before Eid
Saturday, 04 September 2010

The Garments' Sramik Sangram Parishad has urged for the implementation five-point demand of the garments workers, including paying off wages and bonuses by Sep 7.

The organisation's convenor Mahbubur Rahman Ismail, in a written speech, raised the demand at a press briefing on Saturday, at the organisation's temporary office on Topkhana Road, in the capital.

The other demands were-payment of overtime and night duty bill due by Sep 7, release of the arrested labour leaders and withdrawal of false cases, forming trade unions in factories, and stop the firing of labourers.

Ismail said that "many garment factory owners are not inclined to pay off wages and bonuses before the upcoming Eid."

He claimed that rather the owners were trying to cut wages and were not planning to pay bonuses to workers that joined factories less than one year ago.

As a result agitation and mental pressure was increasing among the workers, he added. "In these circumstances, we are urging that our demands be realised.''

Islam also claimed the workers could not maintain their family with the wages they received as "commodity prices have gone up in the month of Ramadan."

He stressed that many workers would remain hungry if their wages and bonuses were not paid before the Eid.

Garments' Sramik Sangram Parishad member secretary Baharana Sultan Bahar was also present at the briefing.
