Saturday, 21 August 2010

Thirteen people have died between Friday night and Saturday morning after having consumed local alcohol on Wednesday night.

Two others -- Bina Das, 32, and Goyas Mia, 25 -- remain under treatment.

Local people say about 15 people had local alcohol at Goalabazar (fish market) on Wednesday night and had started vomiting since Thursday morning.

They were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and local clinics.

Two of the deceased died on Friday night and the 11 others died till Saturday morning, their family members said.

Goalabazar Union Parishad chairman Syed Kaiser Ahmed said, "I've heard about the death of 10-12 persons, and I am now looking into it."

Osmaninagar police chief Nirmulendu Chakrabarti acknowledging the deaths said, "The families did not inform us anything."

"They might have taken home-made low quality alcohol since an anti-drugs police operation has been going on over the last few days."

But he could not confirm the number of deaths.
