Mujib's DU Expulsion Order Withdrawn
Saturday, 14 August 2010

The Dhaka University Syndicate has withdrawn the expulsion order of the architect of independence Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from the law department after 61 years.

The decision came at an emergency meeting of the syndicate on Saturday.

Mujib got enrolled in the department in 1948 and was expelled in 1949 for leading a movement in support of the demand for the increase of fourth grade employees' wages.

Vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique on Friday told bdnews24.com: "We have called a special meeting of the Syndicate over withdrawal of his expulsion."

Pro-VC professor Harun-or-Rashid said an emergency meeting of the Syndicate is only held for very important discussions. "Withdrawal of Mujib's expulsion is a very important issue," he added.

This was the only issue discussed in the meeting on Saturday.

The matter was highlighted recently as Bangladesh Unnayan Sangbadik Forum sent a letter to president Zillur Rahman, also the chancellor of the university, demanding the withdrawal of Mujib's expulsion from the university.

The forum also sent a copy of the letter to the DU VC.
