Govt Doctors Absent from Duty to Face the Music
Tuesday, 10 August 2010

The health ministry has decided to take actions against 68 government doctors found absent from their duties during a recent inspection in nine districts.

"The absentees will be served show-cause notices today," health secretary Muhammad Humayun Kabir told on Monday.

The ministry took the decision at an urgent meeting held with health minister AFM Ruhal Haque in the chair on Monday, just four days after prime minister Sheikh Hasina's warning of actions against the doctors on government payroll, who refuse to work in the rural areas.

She aired the warning while speaking at a function to mark the World Breastfeeding Week at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Wednesday.

The secretary said the ministry is going for the stern actions to ensure that the doctors carry out their duties being present at the respective hospitals and healthcare centres.

Ten inspection teams checked doctors' presence and services at different hospitals and healthcare centres in nine districts on Saturday. The 68 doctors were found absent during the surprise inspection.

There were two officials from the ministry and the Directorate General of Health Services in each inspection team.

Ministry's public relation officer Munshi Jalaluddin told that special teams visited general hospitals at Gazipur Sadar, Sreepur, Kaliakoir, Tongi and Kapasia in Gazipur, Shibpur in Narsinghdi, Mirzapur in Tangail, Saturia and Gheor in Manikganj, Titas and Daudkandi in Comilla, Chandpur Sadar, Nowabganj in Dhaka, Sreenagar and Sirajdikhan in Munshiganj, Narayanganj Sadar and Sonargaon in Narayanganj.
