Saturday, 07 August 2010

The Rapid Action Battalion have arrested nine garment workers on charges of causing violence in Mohakhali, Gulshan and Tejgaon areas on July 30 during protest against the new pay scale.

They were arrested on Thursday night from Mohakhali, Gulshan and Tejgaon areas, RAB-1 commanding officer Lt Col Rashidul Alam told a press briefing on Friday at the RRF Bhaban in Uttara.

The arrestees were Taher Hossain, 22, Ripon Hossain, 20, Rubel Mia, 20, Tapan Mia, 20, Idris Ali, 22, Sagor Hossain, 24, Bachchu Mia, 21, Rasel Mia, 19 and Akbar Hossain, 20.

Alam also said the arrestees had been identified through video, electronic and print media footage and surveillance of intelligence agencies during the protests.

The government announced new minimum wage for the readymade garment workers at Tk 3,000 and Tk 2,500 for apprentice on July 29. However, the garment workers refused to accept the minimum wage, which was set against their demand for Tk 5,000.

Since then workers demonstrated at various places including Dhaka, Narayanganj and Chittagong against the new wage structure.

The government and the readymade garment factory owners, however, have refused to accede to the workers' demand for resetting the minimum wage at Tk 5,000.
