Kh'chhari AL Leader 'Kidnapped', Family Claim
Saturday, 07 August 2010

An Awami League leader of Lakhsmichhari Upazila in Khagrachhari has been kidnapped by some unknown abductors, his family have claimed.

Kalindra Chandra Chakma, 40, organising secretary of the Lakhsmichhari Upazila unit, has been missing since he went to Fatikchhari on Friday evening to see a doctor, Lakhsmichhari police chief Md Kamrul Hasan said quoting Kalindra's daughter Sumita Chakma.

Police, however, are suspecting that the AL leader might have been detained by the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) that opposes the 1997 peace treaty between the government and the Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS).

No one, however, has lodged any complaint with the police, Kamrul added.

Both Uzzal Chakma and Mithun Chakma, respectively the UPDF coordinator and president of its associate organisation the Democratic Youth Forum, refuted the allegation against their organisation, saying that it was simply a false rumour that is being spread by the administration.
