Actions on Past Irregularities: Manzur
Tuesday, 20 July 2010

New Chittagong city mayor M Manzur Alam has said any irregularities in the city corporation in the past will be looked into for effective actions.

He said this in a brief press conference after moving into the mayor office on Tuesday.

He declared that resolving the water-logging problem of the port city is his major goal. "A separate standing committee will be formed in the first general meeting scheduled on July 26 to take effective steps to resolve water-logging."

Responding to journalists, Manzur said, "No projects taken up earlier to develop Chittagong and its citizens will be stopped."

Earlier he was welcomed with bouquets by the city corporation's officers, workers and the ward councillors upon his arrival at the Nagar Bhaban at around 10am. Before that, he had visited the graves of his parents and saint Shah Amanat's grave.

The new mayor entered his office following a Milad-Mahfil at around 10:30am. He took over responsibility from acting mayor Zahirul Alam Dobhash an hour later.

It is after 17 years that the Chittagong City Corporation staff greeted a new mayor, as the preceding mayor ABM Mohuiddin Chowdhury held the office for 17 years in three consecutive terms.

CCC chief executive officer Manzur-e-Elahi Chowdhury and elected ward councillors were present during the handover.

BNP-backed Manzur was elected mayor in the June 17 polls by defeating ruling Awami League-backed Mohiuddin.

A month later, on Sunday, Manzur was sworn in as the mayor by prime minister Sheikh Hasina in her office. After the oath taking, Manzur expressed his gratitude to Chittagong residents for electing him their mayor.

He also told journalists that he had asked the government for its assistance in fulfilling his electoral pledges for Chittagong city developments including dealing with the water-logging problem that is burdening the city.

However, on the same day, Mohiuddin filed a case with the First Joint District Magistrate Court of Golam Faruque alleging that Alam concealed information from the Election Commission before the election and that he should be declared mayor.

Manzur told journalists the case would be dealt with legally.

He urged the CCC officers, workers and ward councillors to work beyond political beliefs in providing services to live up to the reputation the they have gained.

"City Corporation is a service organisation, its major goal is to provide service to the public," he reminded them.

During the tenure of the former mayor Mohiuddin, Manzur was ward councillor for three consecutive times and had served as acting mayor several times.

He had also served as the acting mayor for two years after Nov 11, 2007 when Mohiuddin had been in detention during the caretaker government's term.
