Faruk Warns of Stern Action Against Price Hike
Sunday, 18 July 2010

Commerce minister Faruk Khan has warned of stern action against those responsible for pushing prices of daily commodities up during the upcoming Ramadan.

His warning came while opening a tree plantation programme launched by Kashiani Upazila Krishak League in Gopalganj on Saturday.

He also urged the businessmen not to hike the prices.

The minister claimed that there was no trade syndicate in the country.

"A syndicate increased the price of sugar during last Ramadan. Action was taken against them," he claimed.

The minister also said that prices of daily commodities have been stable over the last 18 months of the Awami League-led Grand Alliance government.

"Prices of one or two things have increased but the price will be reduced through concerted efforts," he said.

"There is an adequate reserve of date, edible oil and lentils in view of the Ramadan. Commodities will be sold at fair prices through 1800 outlets of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh at the Upazila and district levels," he said.

The minister also said that TCB has been made more effective.

Therefore, there is no valid reason for price hike during the Ramadan, he claimed.
