Dhaka Urges Embassies to Accept Paper Passports
Monday, 05 July 2010

Foreign minister Dipu Moni has requested labour-receiving countries to issue visas on paper passports for urgent cases.

She made the request Sunday at a meeting with diplomats from Kuwait, Qatar, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, the Maldives, Malaysia and South Korea at the foreign ministry.

Dipu Moni held the meeting in the wake of some countries' refusal to issue visas on paper-made Bangladeshi passports.

As per the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), all countries must introduce machine readable passport by April 2010.

Home ministry sources say, Bangladesh government has already started issuing MRPs from April this year, but the government could not replace the valid paper-made passports withMRPs due to time constraints.

"We have already started issuing machine readable passport as per the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organisation. But it is not possible to give all the passport holders machine readable passports at a time," Dipu Moni told reporters after the meeting.

"So, we have requested the countries to give visas on the paper-made passport in case of urgency," said the minister, adding, "the government would expedite the process of issuing machine readable passports".
