A total of 59 candidates filed their nomination papers on Monday for the 24 posts of directors to the 38-member executive board of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Among them, 30 submitted nominations for the 12 posts of directors designated for the chamber group while 29 filed nominations for the 12 posts of directors designated for the association group.

As per the FBCCI rules, 14 directors --- nominated by the country’s seven leading chambers and seven associations --- also filed their nomination papers on Monday, said sources in the FBCCI election board.

The election board will announce the primary list of valid candidatures on February 14 and poll will be held on March 17. The new board, comprised of 38 directors, will elect one president and two vice-presidents on March 19 to lead the apex trade body for the next two years.

The trade body sources said most of the candidates were grouped under two panels – one is led by aspiring president candidate Annisul Huq and another by A Rouf Chowdhury.

Annisul Huq, representing the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, is going to be directly elected to the board while Rouf Chowdhury, representing the edible oil refiners’ association, will have to be elected through voting.

FBCCI election was scheduled for August 16 last year, but was deferred following a case filed by one BGMEA member challenging the legality of the election of the trade body representatives and suspension of their memberships of the FBCCI.

On December 6, the High Court, upheld the membership of the representatives of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association in the general body.

The same day, the government appointed Syed Manzur Elahi administrator of the FBCCI for four months.
