Law minister promises war crimes tribunal

Dhaka, Feb 13 (bdnews24.com) – The law minister has said a tribunal will be formed in line with a proposal adopted recently in the parliament.

Shafiq Ahmed made the comment when a delegation, led by chairman of 'Citizens' Commission on War Crimes' Justice Golam Rabbani, handed a set of recommendations to him.

The recommendations include immediate constitution of a special tribunal.

According to a press release of 'Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee', the delegation included Prof. Kabir Chowdhury, former secretary Waliur Rahman, Prof. Ajay Rai, Mahfuja Khanom, Shamoli Nasrin Chowdhury, Abdul Ahad Chowdhury, Ferdousi Priyabhasini, Shahriar Kabir, Jiad Al Malum, Muntasir Mamun, Rana Dasgupta, Khandaker Abdul Mannan and Tania Amir.

The Nagorik Commission called on the law ministry to constitute the tribunal in line with International Crimes (Tribunal) Act-1973.

It is possible to try the offenders under the Act and there is no need to go to any international organisation or United Nations for the trail, it added.
