Lt Gen ATM Zahirul Alam has been appointmed Force Commander for the UN Peacekeeping Mission to war-ravaged Liberia.

Foreign adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury told Wednesday: "This is an acknowledgement by the UN of the peacekeeping services being consistently provided by Bangladesh."
A ministry of establishment order on Tuesday said: "Abu Tayob Mohammad Zahirul Alam, posted in the ministry of foreign affairs on deputation for appointment as an ambassador, has been placed under the Armed Forces Division. The order will come into effect immediately.
Alam, who was former head of the National Defence College, subsequently spending over four months since June 2 at the foreign ministry on deputation, will soon fly to Liberia to take up his new assignment as Force Commander.
Official sources in Dhaka said the appointment to the post in Liberia is the highest so far for Bangladesh in the UN Peacekeeping Mission.
In another new posting, Major General Anwar Hossain, Comilla Area Commander and GOC of 33 Infantry Division, has been appointed Chief Military Observer in United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG).
