An income tax lawyer has sued the National Board of Revenue chairman Md Abdul Majid for libel.

Advocate Sadique Hossain filed the defamation case on Wednesday at Mymensingh judicial magistrate's court, accusing the NBR boss of making 'dishonourable and libelous' remarks about income tax lawyers.s.

Sadique, deputy secretary general of the Bangladesh Tax Lawyers' Association, Dhaka Division, filed the case under the Bangladesh Penal Code.

The case cited an interview of the NBR chairman published on Feb. 15 in the Bangla-language daily Prothom Alo, which 'contained the contentious remarks'.

Majid was reported to have said: "Whenever a taxpayer approaches an income tax expert, she or he is intimidated by the professional into parting with money."

The tax expert scares the taxpayer and encourages them to part with the money to avoid paying taxes, the NBR chief was quoted as saying.

Accepting the case, judicial magistrate Ferdous Wahid ordered an investigation report by Nov 27
