Detained former prime minister Khaleda Zia appeared in court Sunday for the first time since she was sent to jail last year.

The former PM was taken from the special jail to the nearby Special Judge's Court-9 set up in the Sangsad Bhaban area shortly after 11 am for charge framing proceedings in the Niko graft case.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has frozen more than 2,000 beneficiary owner accounts on charges of violating securities law, an official said Sunday.

BO accounts are necessary for investors to trade in securities on the capital market, which have to be opened with banks against deposit accounts through brokerage houses.

US records lowest monthly losses in Iraq as unrest dips PDF Print E-mail

Nineteen US soldiers were killed in Iraq in May, the lowest monthly death toll since the US-led invasion of 2003, the military said on Sunday, as the government reported a big fall in Iraqi deaths, reports agency.

The month which saw the highest US losses was November 2004, when 137 American troops were killed, according to the independent icasualties.org website. The previous low was in February 2004 when 20 soldiers were killed.

AFP, NEW DELHI - India's metals and mining company Sterlite Industries said it has signed a deal to buy US copper mining company Asarco for 2.6 billion dollars.

Sterlite, a subsidiary of British mining group Vedanta Resources, will acquire three open-pit copper mines, a copper smelter and a refinery among other assets, the company said in a statement on Saturday.

REUTERS, NEW YORK- JPMorgan Chase & Co said on Saturday it completed its $1.4 billion Bear Stearns Cos takeover, capping the demise of a Wall Street firm that survived the Depression and numerous slumps in its 85 years but could not navigate the mortgage crisis.

Weakened by its massive exposure to mortgage markets and the embarrassing blow-up of two of its hedge funds, Bear was driven to the brink of bankruptcy in March by traders who drained about $17 billion of the firm's cash in a matter of days.

REUTERS, DUBAI - State-controlled Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) said it was in talks to buy 50 aircraft worth a total of about $2.5 billion to expand its leasing business.

DAE, which last year ordered up to $13.5 billion of aircraft from Airbus, is looking to buy single- and twin-aisle planes over the next 18 months, including Boeing Co 777s and Airbus A330s, Bob Genise, Chief Executive Officer of DAE Capital, told Reuters on Sunday.

CAPE CANAVERAL (AFP) - The US shuttle Discovery carrying a Japanese research laboratory raced toward the International Space Station Sunday after a successful launch from Florida.

REUTERS, YANGON - Myanmar's military junta on Sunday defended its response to Cyclone Nargis after stinging criticism from the United States, while a U.N. official said food supplies had yet to reach at least 200,000 people.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who has accused the regime of causing more deaths by stonewalling foreign aid, said on Sunday U.S. ships cruising near Myanmar could leave in a "matter of days" if they cannot deliver relief supplies.
