Birshreshtha Hamidur laid to rest at home PDF Print E-mail

Birshreshtha Hamidur Rahman was finally laid to eternal rest in his homeland yesterday with the highest state honours, 36 years after he embraced martyrdom during a battle with Pakistan occupation forces.

Before the burial, the nation paid homage to the Liberation War hero as the coffin with his remains reached the National Parade Square in the capital in the morning.

December 10, marks the 60th anniversary of United Nation's historic Genocide Convention, which is significant for Bangladesh, surviving a brutal genocide.

In his speech titled “60th anniversary of Genocide Convention and Bangladesh”, Mafidul Haque said, “According to the Genocide Convention, the government of the state as well as the UN are responsible to initiate the trials of war criminals. However, we have not found any initiative as of yet in our country.”

Bangladesh starts campaign to vaccinate 25 million children against polio PDF Print E-mail

Some 700,000 Bangladeshi health workers and volunteers started vaccinating about 25 million children under age five on Saturday as part of the country's efforts to eliminate polio after the disease re-emerged last year, the Health Ministry said.
Many makeshift vaccination camps were set up at bus and train stations in the capital, Dhaka, and elsewhere to provide children with two drops of liquid vaccine, the ministry said in a statement.

Extreme weather events, melting glaciers and sea-level rise, and an increasing number of climate refugees could overwhelm countries, according to the report prepared by German and Swiss researchers

Bangladesh buries teenage war hero with state honors PDF Print E-mail

With a full state honors, Bangladesh on Tuesday laid to rest a teenage war hero killed almost four decades ago fighting Pakistani forces during the country's independence war.
Hamidur Rahman died in 1971 at the age of 17 while raiding a Pakistani military post in what was then known as East Pakistan, which months later gained independence and became Bangladesh.

The United States is increasing funding to help Bangladesh fight bird flu, saying the densely populated country is at high risk of pandemic if the virus jumped to humans, a top U.S. aid official said on Sunday.
"Bangladesh is particularly in high risk because of its dense population. If this virus transmits to people it would be a pandemic," U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Assistant Administrator Kent R. Hill said in Dhaka

The loss in rice production caused by floods and the devastating cyclone Sidr this year in Bangladesh was estimated at 260 billion taka (about 3.7 billion U.S. dollars),local newspaper The Independent reported Tuesday.
This was disclosed here Monday at a press briefing on a joint survey report titled "Post-Sidr Agriculture Rehabilitation" conducted by the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a local think-tank.
