Indian government accused of playing down Bihar flooding with an official death toll of 65

Two thousand people are now feared dead in the floods caused after a river changed course, submerging hundreds of villages in northern India and sparking claims that the Indian government is playing down the scale of the tragedy, reports Reuters.

Although the official death toll in India's Bihar state is just 65, aid agencies claim thousands are missing in the flooded area. The Kosi river breached its banks 11 days ago on the border with Nepal, flowing through a channel 75 miles (120km) east of its natural route.

The bench of justices Khademul Islam Chowdhury and Mashuk Hossain Ahmed ordered the government to show cause within the next six weeks.

Asks govt to explain why sections of it should not be declared unconstitutional

The High Court on Thursday asked the government to explain why sections of the amended RPO relating to political party's constitution and politics based on religion should not be declared unconstitutional.

The bench of justices Syed Mahmud Hossain and Farid Ahmed made the ruling in line with a writ petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed.

The High Court on Thursday acquitted life convicts lt col (dismissed) Syed Farook Rahman, retired lt col Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, retired majors Bazlul Huda and AKM Mohiuddin of the charges, and upheld death sentence for Risladar Moslemuddin in the Jail Killing Case.

It acquitted two fugitive death convicts Dafadar Marfat Ali and Abul Hashem Mridha.

The Awami League and some other political parties, and a family of a slain national leader killed inside jail in 1975 have rejected the High Court verdict in the Jail Killing Case.

The High Court on Thursday acquitted four of the 12 life convicts of the charges and two of the three death convicts in the case that involves assassination of the four national leaders of the provisional Bangladesh government at Mujibnagar in Nov 3, 1975.

Oil prices shot higher for the fourth straight day, breaking through $120 per barrel as Tropical Storm Gustav headed for the Gulf of Mexico and strengthened as it bore down on the vast U.S. energy infrastructure along the coast.

Maximus sustained winds increased to near 70 mph and the National Weather Service expects the storm to become a full-fledged hurricane later in the day.

An official "watch list" of potentially troubled US banks has lengthened from 90 to 117 as the credit crunch wreaks havoc throughout the financial industry.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which guarantees customers' money held in US banks, said the quarterly list was the longest since mid-2003 and is asking its members to increase contributions to a dwindling bail-out fund.

AP, NEW YORK  -- Stocks turned higher Wednesday after the government reported a larger-than-expected increase in orders for big-ticket manufactured goods, offsetting some unease about a rise in oil prices.

The Commerce Department said orders for durable goods jumped 1.3 percent in July compared to the previous month, led by a big gain in demand for commercial aircraft. That was well above the 0.1 increase expected by economists surveyed by Thomson/IFR.

AP, RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Barbie may have taken some of the sass out of her pouty-lipped rivals Yasmin, Jade, Cloe and Sasha with a $100 million verdict against Bratz-maker MGA Entertainment Inc., but no one's left the playground yet.

A federal jury awarded toy giant Mattel the damages Tuesday in their copyright infringement lawsuit against MGA, but lawyers for the two playtime powerhouses are still wrangling over whether MGA can continue to make the saucy Bratz line.
