Reuters, Beijing- China pledged on Thursday to seize a rare opportunity for reconciliation with Taiwan and respect the desire of Taiwanese to be their own masters, a sign Beijing is in no hurry to bring the self-ruled island it claims as its own back to the fold.

Two days after Ma Ying-jeou became Taiwan's new president ending the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party's troubled eight-year rule, Chinese Minister of Taiwan Affairs Chen Yunlin said both sides were making "positive" efforts to resume negotiations.

Reuters, Johannesburg - South Africa's President Thabo Mbeki gave approval on Wednesday for the army to help end attacks on foreigners that have killed more than 40 people.

The attacks on African immigrants, accused by many poor South Africans of taking scarce jobs and fuelling crime, have forced thousands of people from their homes, unnerved investors and hit the rand currency.

Reuters, Tampa, Florida, - The United States' initial military success against al Qaeda and other Islamist extremists has yielded a diffuse organization of independent elements that are now more difficult to defeat, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Wednesday.

"Early successes in these campaigns - disrupting command and control centers, and taking away safe havens - have only yielded a franchised and networked enemy that is more diffuse, an ideological movement that is no longer tethered to any strict hierarchy," the Pentagon chief said in the most downbeat assessment he has given on the Bush administration's progress in the war on terror.

Angry students torched Sholoshahar railway station after a student of Chittagong University was killed Thursday morning as a shuttle train ran over him, eye witnesses said.

REUTERS, KABUL - The international community should back a $50-billion Afghan development strategy at a donors' conference in Paris next month, but Kabul must also fight rampant corruption, the U.N.'s special envoy said on Thursday.

Afghanistan depends on aid for 90 percent of its spending. But international donors have fallen behind in paying what they have already pledged and much of the money goes straight back to donor countries in salaries and profits. Official corruption eats into the remainder.

AFP, JOHANNESBURG  - South African President Thabo Mbeki has called in troops to halt attacks on foreigners as the death toll from more than a week of violence nearly doubled and attacks began to spread.

A statement from his office said Mbeki had agreed to a request from the police for the involvement of the army as it emerged that 42 people were now known to have died.
