A three-day workshop was launched in Dhaka on Sunday, aimed at enhancing knowledge on the basic elements of humanitarian laws among the officials concerned for their better implementation and application.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Committee of Red Cross in Dhaka organised the workshop on humanitarian laws for the officials of different ministries.

A two-day exposition on water and sanitation, titled ‘Watsan Expo 2008’ marking United Nations International Year of Sanitation 2008 begins at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Centre in Dhaka.

Water Aid Bangladesh, an NGO, will organise the exposition to make people aware of drinking safe water and using sanitation for helping the government to achieve 100 percent sanitation coverage by 2010, said the Water Aid acting country representative, M Azahar Ali, at a news conference at the National Press Club.

Two persons were killed and two others injured in a road accident at the second gate of Chittagong University Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses said the accident took place at around 3:00pm when a truck rammed into an auto-rickshaw, leaving its two passengers Parvez Alam, 32 and Badsha Mia, 20, dead on the spot.

Sex workers at a discussion on Sunday demanded legal recognition of their profession to ensure their rights which are repeatedly violated by all.

Sex Workers Network of Bangladesh organised the discussion at the Dhaka Reporters Unity with the help of Actionaid Bangladesh and Concern to mark the International Sex Workers Rights Day that will be observed on Monday (March 3) across the world.

A welcome move indeed

The sentiment that the government values the views of the people as is evident from the move to begin regional consultations for feedback and opinions ahead of preparing the national budget for the next fiscal year is indeed commendable and praiseworthy, especially from the adviser of an unelected and non-representative regime. But if past experience provides any indication, Mirza Aziz, or this government for that matter, has hardly shown much respect to the opinions of the citizens or stakeholders.

Police retrieved seven more dead bodies Sunday from the Buriganga, in the wake of Thursday's disastrous launch accident, pushing the death count to 46.

Friends and relatives of the still missing passengers of ML Sourav-1 were seen crowding the Buriganga banks around the accident spot near the Buriganga Bridge-1, hoping against hopes to find the bodies of their loved ones.

No bank official will be allowed to take payment for attending board or committee meetings, Bangladesh Bank said Sunday. An emergency circular of the central bank was sent out to chief executives of all banks, except foreign ones.

In line with the circular, no salaried officer of any state-run or private bank, including the managing director or equivalent, will be permitted to receive honorariums for attending any board meeting of the bank or any committee formed by the board.

ISLAMABAD, Reuters - At least 39 people were killed and scores more injured when a suicide bomber attacked a traditional tribal meeting in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, officials said.

Pakistan is in the middle of a wave of violence blamed on al Qaeda-linked militants based in tribal lands on the Afghan border and there have been three suicide attacks in as many days.

Nipah virus claimed two more lives on Saturday, raising the death toll to six since its fresh outbreak was reported last week in Manikganj and Rajbari districts.

Rabiul Mullah, 9 and Neyamat Sheikh, 55 died at Rajbari Sadar Hospital on Saturday. Earlier, Shakil Mullah, 11 died on Thursday in Rajbari, while Yusuf, 7, Azahar, 9 and Joshna Akhter Joshi, 11— three children of a family— died in Manikganj.

The chief adviser, Fakhruddin Ahmed, on Saturday urged the country’s physicians to practise the key principles of medical ethics, saying that welfare of patients should be their ultimate goal of professional efforts.

‘It is essential to treat patients with compassion and good conduct… You will have to follow the principles of equality and fairness in providing services and protecting dignity and privacy of the patients,’ he said.

The army chief, General Moeen U Ahmed, returned home Saturday night at the end of his week-long tour of India, which he billed successful.

A Bangladeshi was killed by India’s Border Security Force every day and a half on an average, taking the number of such death to 12 in February, said human rights organisation Odhikar.

In its monthly report on human rights released on Saturday, Odhikar also said four Bangladeshis were reportedly injured and three allegedly abducted by the Indian border guards in February.
