Solar power and bio—fuel driven energy are the alternative sources of energy worldwide today. In our country, alternatives to gas and diesel driven power stations may be replaced by coal -driven generations . The Chief Adviser has inaugurated this two-day a two-day programme on July 10 that includes a national workshop and an exhibition of the renewable energy products at a city hotel. In the wake of worldwide crisis in availability of fossil fuels and the controversy over converting food grains to bio-fuel , renewable energy sources such as solar power , bio-gas and other non-traditional fuels are being tapped .Steps are being taken to make mandatory the use of solar power in the new and under -construction high-rise buildings at Dhaka and other cities in the country .Also incentives will be provided to the older - building owners to convert to solar power and other renewable energy sources. To achieve this goal necessary changes are being made in the existing building -code rules . The eight-point target of this special campaign include bringing efficiency in the use of energy , preventing pilferage and misuse in the consumption of electricity and gas , installing energy-saving equipment in industries , conserving energy in businesses and homes and installing solar panels in city buildings and high rises. As we have seen in recent years , the use of renewable energy sources , particularly solar panels, is increasing worldwide. All nations , both rich and poor are seeking alternatives to fossil fuels .But ,till today Bangladesh has only 2.5 lakh solar panels in use , in a total household count of over 30 million. Only a total of 10-25 megawatts of power now come from solar energy panels , whereas ,in Germany, for example twenty per cent of power generated comes from solar energy . The government should ask Donors to offer us financial and technological assistance to install the maximum number of solar panels in all high-rise and under-construction buildings in our cities. Construction loans by financial institutions , must now include mandatory provisions for installing solar panels in such bank -financed buildings The next programme should be to install these in the mofussil towns and villages, and in particular , the industrial installations. We congratulate the government for taking this timely step in the wake of rising fuel prices and scarcity of fossil fuels .
