The price enhancement of electricity is much to the agony of the consumers. The Energy Regulatory Commission has already decided to raise the price of electricity for wholesale purchasers and distributors at the rate of 16 to 18 per cent. They include Dhaka Power Distribution Company Dhaka Electric Supply Company ,Rural Electrification Board , West Zone Power Distribution Company  etc. Under the BERC law of 2003 the responsibility for taking decision on any proposal for raising the price of electricity and fuel rests with the BERC while the government is responsible for its execution. Needless to say, although the price hike is preliminarily meant for the wholesale purchasers its main brunt has to be borne ultimately by the ordinary consumers of electricity. DPDC has already made it amply clear that due to enhancement of price of electricity for the wholesale purchasers, they will have to raise the price at the general consumer level and they have already conveyed this decision to the BERC. The people's sufferings know no bound due to persistent power crisis resulting in frequent load shedding that causes water scarcity too. It will be very unfortunate to impose additional financial burden upon them instead of resolving the electricity crisis and redressing their sufferings. The authorities had assured the people on the eve of the month of holy Ramadan that at least during this month the supply of electricity would be smooth as far as possible and there would be no load shedding at the time of Iftar, Tarabi prayer and Sehry. But they have miserably failed to keep their words and now on the eve of the holy Eid has come the shameless move to raise the electricity price. Earlier, on different occasions this government has raised the prices of fertilizers, fuel oil, CNG gas etc and is now set to raise the prices of gas and electricity just two three months before their pledged departure from power. This will simply add to their failure in running the state.
