Rice prices in the markets have come down by a couple of Takas per Kg and have stabilized there, which is to say that prices of the cereal still remains out of the buying capacity of the majority of the people of the Country. On the other hand, farmers are selling paddy and rice at noticeably lower prices , which means that farmers are not getting the remunerations they ought to have and are barely able to meet their production costs.

RMG sector is evolving into the largest employer of workers .But , workers’ wages, other benefits and welfare needs are not increasing consistently . In the latest incident , at least thirty people, including journalists who were on the spot ,were injured as nearly five thousand workers of three garments factories clashed with police engaged in maintaining order , at Kalurghat industrial area. The trouble started on Monday when at one of the factories the workers came to know that the management has reduced their wage rates .

An unjustified move indeed

Doubling of CNG prices by a government having no mandate to take any major decision will have a serious bearing on the economy. It will hit the people below their belt. This is happening at a time when millions of people are going half-fed in the country. It is reported that the BPC used to sustain 30 crore taka loss on account of subsidy to CNG before doubling of the price. Since the caretakers assumed power in 2007, it harboured a funny notion that all the rich and wealthy are the people who earned money through questionable and corrupt means.

The allegation of executive’s interference in the judicial process of Sheikh Hasina is unfortunate. Before the judge of the special court now trying the former PM Barrister Shafique Ahmed, a former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, alleged that lawyers of Hasina were allegedly summoned and were asked not to make their court submissions lengthy or talk to the media. I may have to face the same music some day, he said.
