The Jatiya Party and Bikalpadhara Bangladesh on Wednesday initiated a move to find out common ground and work together on certain political issues.

The two former presidents of the country — HM Ershad, founder of the Jatiya Party, and Badruddoza Chowdhury, founder of Bikalpadhara Bangladesh — held a meeting at the latter’s Gulshan residence in the afternoon where they decided to find out common ground and work together in the present and future political arena, said a press release.

Muslims across the country observed Akheri Chahar Shamba on Wednesday marking the recovery of Prophet Mohammad from prolonged illness.

In the capital, Azimpur Dayera Shariff Khankah observed ‘Shokrana Dibas’ with daylong programmes, including doa and milad mahfil. Rings with special doa were also distributed among the devotees.

Jamaluddin’s son held for assaulting SI PDF Print E-mail

The police arrested kidnapped and slain Chittagong businessman Jamaluddin Chowdhury’s eldest son, Chowdhury Farman Reza Liton, and two of his friends for assaulting a police official on Tuesday night.

Liton and his friends, identified as Fahmida Sultana Munmun and Jahangir Alam, were produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court on Wednesday morning. The court sent Liton and Jahangir to jail and granted bail to Munmun, said court sources.

The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, has expressed deep shock at the death of Bangladeshi UN peacekeeper Flight Lieutenant AkM Nazmul Huda.

In a letter to Bangladesh permanent representative to the UN, New York, ambassador Ismat Jahan, Ban Ki-moon conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to Bangladesh government and to the bereaved family members.

Four anticorruption taskforce officials quizzed former prime minister Khaleda Zia in special jail in the Niko graft case for more than four hours Thursday, her lawyers said.

After the anticorruption taskforce left the special jail around 7:45pm, Khaleda's lawyers Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Masud Ahmed Talukder discussed the cases against her and efforts to bring unity to the troubled party, according to a news briefing.

More than 1,200 workers of the Ashraf Textile Mills at Tongi in Gazipur went out on demonstrations as they failed to encash the cheque they were given by the authorities two years ago for payment of their dues.

Sources said the authorities on March 12, 2006 closed down the factory, sprawling on 56 bighas of land, without notice.

The government has sought wealth statements from all the teachers, officers, employees of the University of Rajshahi.

The acting registrar of the university, M Shafi, on Tuesday notified the teachers, officials and employees, including the vice-chancellor, pro-vice-chancellor, treasurer and the deans, to submit their wealth statements.

The Liberation War Sector Commanders’ Forum has called on people to observe a countrywide ‘blackout’ at midnight on March 25 demanding the trial of war criminals.

A total of 15 officials and employees of Arab Bangladesh Bank’s Islampur Branch in Dhaka fell unconscious on Tuesday for, what police suspect, poor ventilation.

Seven of them were hospitalised while the rest were given first aid. Bank sources said, principal officer Sayeduzzaman was the first to lose consciousness at about 11:30 am and 14 others fainted one after another.

The Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday approved a first information report to sue former Khulna mayor Kazi Aminul Haque, also an Awami League leader, for hiding information and amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.

Former BNP lawmaker Sarder Sakhawat Hossain Bakul, meanwhile, submitted his wealth statement to the commission showing that he and the family have share certificates worth more than Tk 6.25 crore and own a 4-katha plot and four flats at Gulshan, about 22 bighas of land in Narsingdi and more than Tk 67 lakh on cash.

The High Court Tuesday granted bail to former prime minister Khaleda Zia's son Tarique Rahman in twin extortion cases and suspended their proceedings in the trial court.

The High Court bench of Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Justice Shahidul Islam granted the bail to Tarique, now detained in jail, after he filed two writ petitions.

The government has selected one institution and three persons for the Independence Award 2008 in recognition of their glorious and meritorious contributions at the national level.

According to a statement released by the Press Information Department Tuesday, Bangladesh Rifles gets the award in the institution category for its contribution in the War of Liberation.
