Charges of abetting in corruption

The High Court Wednesday exempted six people from the cases that involve charges of abetting their relatives in corruption in five cases filed by the Anticorruption Commission.

They are former foreign minister M Morshed Khan's wife Nasrin Khan, daughter-in-law Shama Shajnin Khan, Dhaka city ward commissioner Abdul Quaiyum's wife Shamim Ara Begum, former AL MP Kamal Ahmed Majumder's wife Shahida Kamal, daily Jugantor owner Nurul Islam Babul's son Shamim Islam and former state minister Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu's wife Sabina Yasmin.

The government is set to kick off a campaign for increasing the use of renewable power and energy, the chief adviser's special assistant M Tamim said Wednesday, reports bdnews24.com

Chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed will inaugurate a workshop at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel Thursday as part of the campaign, Tamim said at a press conference at the power, energy and mineral resources ministry.

Detained former prime minister Khaleda Zia was produced in a Dhaka court Wednesday morning for charge framing proceedings in the Gatco graft case.

Khaleda was brought to judge Shahed Nuruddin's special court at around 10:15 am from the nearby special jail on the Sangsad Bhaban complex.

An alleged leader of a banned militant outfit died in an exchange of gunfire with police at Taherhuda village in Harinakundu, Jhenaidah, in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.

Awami League religious affairs secretary Sheikh Md Abdullah surrendered to a special court Wednesday in a case filed against him by the Anticorruption Commission.

Following his surrender to the Special Judge's Court-5 at noon, a bail plea was submitted to the court. Judge Md Ashraf Hossain rejected the plea, ordering him to be sent straight to jail.

The High Court Tuesday held a hearing on a writ petition filed by detained former prime minister Khaleda Zia challenging the legality of Niko graft case and its trial proceedings.

The court asked the Anticorruption Commission to submit documents, regarding the ACC's approval of the case and for taking the case into cognisance, by 2pm the following day.

The government and the Anticorruption Commission have appealed against Monday's High Court order halting the proceedings of two cases against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Appellate Division chamber judge MA Matin refrained on Tuesday from ruling on the HC order and set July 10 for a full-bench hearing on the appeals to overrule the HC's stay orders on the two graft cases against Hasina.

The High Court Tuesday stayed two separate graft cases filed against the wives of Rajshahi mayor MIzanur Rahman Minu and Barisal mayor Mujibur Rahman Sarwar.

A High Court bench of justices Sharif Uddin Chaklader and Imdadul Haque Azad stayed the cases for four months each following petitions by the accused to annul the cases.

Internet service providers Tuesday asked the government to open up WiMAX licensing to the Bangladeshi organisations which will qualify on merit.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission will provide three licenses for WiMAX through bidding, with floor prices for each at Tk 25 crore in acquisition fees which will increase thanks to the bidding.

Detained former prime minister Khaleda Zia filed a writ petition with the High Court on Monday, for the second time challenging the legality of the Niko graft case against her and its proceedings in trial court.

Barrister Kaiser Kamal filed the petition on Khaleda's behalf with the High Court bench of justices Khademul Islam Chowdhury and Mashuk Hossain Ahmed. Tuesday has been set for a hearing on the challenge to the case.

Chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed left Dhaka Monday morning for Kuala Lumpur to for a D-8 summit to be held there.

The 'Developing-8' is a grouping of 8 Islamic countries formed in 1997, comprising Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
