Charge-framing in MiG-29 case deferred to April 27Staff Correspondent
A Dhaka court Sunday deferred charge-framing against Sheikh Hasina to April 27 in a case that alleges her involvement in the MiG-29 warplane purchase during her tenure as prime minister.

Judge Golam Mortuza of Dhaka Special Judge's Court set up in the Sangsad Bhaban reset the date for charge-framing in the presence of all the accused, except for Hasina.

Detained former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has been readmitted to Square Hospital, officials said Saturday.

Head of the hospital's physicians' panel Prof Sanwar Hossain told bdnews24.com: "After her check up this morning, it was found that Sheikh Hasina's blood pressure was fluctuating."

The recommendations of the Ulama Review Committee, regarding the proposed national women's development policy, are unconstitutional, Communist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim said Saturday.

He also alleged that the hardliners and war criminals were opposed to the proposed women's development policy in a bid to "protect their interests".

A legal aid organisation asked the government Saturday to cancel a recommended amendment to the country's labour legislation to ban political involvement of trade unions saying the recommendation was unconstitutional.

Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) also suggested that the government change 77 sections of the Labour Law 2006, at a seminar on labour law at the CIRDAP auditorium.

The Progressive Democratic Party announced Saturday that it would pursue the matter in the country's courts if emergency powers rules were not relaxed at least four months in advance of any upcoming elections.

PDP convenor Dr Ferdous Ahmed Quarishi outlined his party's position at a press conference at the PDP central office in the city. Quarishi specifically criticised the caretaker administration's plan to hold four city corporation elections and 10 municipal elections in May.

One Bangladeshi and two Indian cattle traders were killed and two other Bangladeshis injured when Indian Border Security Force (BSF) sprayed bullets on them on Burimari frontier at Muglabari village in Patgram upazila early Friday, reports UNB.

The deceased Bangladeshi cattle trader was identified as M Ainul Huq, 32, son of Kandura Mia of the village while two Indian citizens are Sri Amal Chandra, 22, and Khokon Mohanta, 19, of Chengrabandha thana in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.

Bangladesh is very much ‘on track’ to achieve millennium development goal 4 on child survival, but is far away from the target of reducing maternal deaths towards goal 5 of the United Nations set for 2015, according to a report available in the city on Friday, reports agency.

The mortality of children under five years of age has come down at 69 per thousand live births in 2006 from 149 in 1990, marking a 4.8 percent average annual rate of reduction, which is slightly over the final target to achieve the mortality at 50 by 2015.

Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) is implementing an uplift project, providing funds to the small entrepreneurs side by side with raising the scope of development activities in several parts of the country’s northern region, reports agnency.

According to RAKUB officials, the five-year “Small Enterprise Development Credit Project” is being implemented in 46 upazilas of greater Rajshahi, Pabna and Bogra districts and in one upazila of Kurigram district by spending around Taka 59.98 crore since July, 2003.

Metropolitan magistrate M Emran Hossain Chowdhury of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court for Dhaka made the order and asked the authorities of Dhaka Central Jail to ensure Shahidul's medical treatment and a division status in line with the jail code.
