AP, HOUSTON -- Royal Dutch Shell, BP and other oil companies wrapped up evacuations and shut down production Saturday as an intensifying Hurricane Gustav churned toward the petroleum-rich waters of the Gulf of Mexico. As of midday Saturday, slightly more than three-fourths of the Gulf's oil production and nearly 40 percent of its natural gas output had been shut down, according to the U.S. Minerals Management Service, which oversees offshore activity. |

REUTERS, GENEVA- As ministers from over 100 countries gather in Ghana to review how effective aid is in helping developing nations deal with poverty, many economists argue the answer is elsewhere -- in freeing up trade. The meeting in Accra this week comes just over a month after talks at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to secure a breakthrough in the long-running Doha round collapsed at the end of July. |

AP, NEW YORK -- Retail gas prices swung higher Friday -- the first increase in 43 days -- as analysts warned that a direct hit on U.S. energy infrastructure by Hurricane Gustav could send pump prices hurtling toward $5 a gallon. Meanwhile, oil prices ended the day slightly lower, falling for a second straight session. But prices fluctuated sharply as some traders feared supply disruptions and others bet the government will release supplies from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve if Gustav wreaks havoc in the Gulf of Mexico area -- home to a quarter of U.S. crude supplies and 40 percent of refining capacity. |

AP, NEW YORK -- Gold prices fell slightly Friday as a stronger dollar prompted selling from investors seeking commodities as an inflation hedge. The 15-nation euro bought $1.4671, down from $1.4702 late Thursday in New York. A stronger dollar typically encourages investors to shed hard assets like gold, which is viewed as a safe-haven investment used to hedge against inflation and weakness in the U.S. currency. |

First it was Russia. Now it is the Middle East. The Hummer - one of America's most iconic automotive brands - looks less and less likely to be staying in the US after General Motors admitted it had received expressions of interest from investors in the Gulf states, reports The Telegraph. The comments came hot on the heels of news earlier this month that Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska has held early-stage talks with GM about buying the brand. |

AP, NEW YORK -- Stocks turned higher Wednesday after the government reported a larger-than-expected increase in orders for big-ticket manufactured goods, offsetting some unease about a rise in oil prices. The Commerce Department said orders for durable goods jumped 1.3 percent in July compared to the previous month, led by a big gain in demand for commercial aircraft. That was well above the 0.1 increase expected by economists surveyed by Thomson/IFR. |

The Energy Challenge NY Times When the builders of the Maple Ridge Wind farm spent $320 million to put nearly 200 wind turbines in upstate New York, the idea was to get paid for producing electricity. But at times, regional electric lines have been so congested that Maple Ridge has been forced to shut down even with a brisk wind blowing. That is a symptom of a broad national problem. Expansive dreams about renewable energy, like Al Gore's hope of replacing all fossil fuels in a decade, are bumping up against the reality of a power grid that cannot handle the new demands. |

AP, CAIRO, Egypt -- Cairo's luxury Grand Hyatt hotel is serving alcohol again after a compromise was reached between the international chain and the hotel's Saudi owner who abruptly declared it a dry venue earlier this year. The Saudi sheik's decision in April to follow Islam's ban on alcohol and stop serving it at one of the city's swankiest tourist landmarks shocked many in Egypt's vital tourism industry. All of Cairo's international hotel chains serve alcohol, as do many tourist restaurants. |
