Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has filed an ad interim bail petition with the High Court in a fraud case.

The bench of justices Nozrul Islam Chowdhury and Mohammad Anwarul Haque is likely to hear the plea on Tuesday, a day after its filing.

"The petition is in Tuesday's cause list (No 326) of the HC bench and it may hear the plea today," deputy attorney general Mohammad Ullah Kislu told

Abdul Mazed, resident of Gangahati village under Ataikula Upazila of Pabna, filed the fraud case (under section 420) with the Pabna Cognisance Court against Yunus on Feb 15.

The plaintiff also named Pabna regional manager of Grameen Bank Mahbubur Rahman, administrative official Masud Raza and Ataikula branch manager Mohammad Habibur Rahman as co-accused in the case.

According to the case details, Mazed's wife, a Grameen Bank village phone user, received an overdue phone bill of Tk 76,589 even though she had paid the bills regularly.

It was alleged that the plaintiff's wife was deceived with the issuance on the due bill.

It was claimed in the bail plea that Yunus had been deceptively involved in the case. "There is no allegation against Yunus in the case."

It was also added in the bail appeal that a vested interest group had instigated filing of the case six years after the incident to tarnish the image of Yunus.
