The International Crimes Tribunal will hear on Sunday the investigation panel's appeal to remand Jamaat-e-Islami leader Matiur Rahman Nizami.

Tribunal's registrar Mohammad Shahinur Islam revealed this to reporters at his office on Thursday.

On the same day, it will also hear another appeal by the panel for the arrest of former BNP MP M A Alim.

A former railway minister in the government of Ziaur Rahman, Alim allegedly committed war crimes in different places in the northern region, including Joypurhat and Akkelpur.

The ICT investigation panel on Wednesday pleaded to the tribunal registrar seeking permission to take Nizami and Salahuddin Quader Chowdury on remand.

Islam said the tribunal would hear Salahuddin's arrest plea on Apr 19, the scheduled date for producing Salahuddin before it.

"The copy of the arrest plea could not be handed over to Salahuddin's lawyer due to his absence. And this is why the proceedings are taking time," he said.

Nizami's lawyers, however, received the copy of the appeal regarding him.

Islam also said Nizami would not be produced before the tribunal on Sunday, the hearing day.

Asked whether the duration for quizzing him would be extended through changing the tribunal regulations, Islam said, "Everything will be done to ensure a transparent trial."

Formation of a unit to ensure security of the witnesses is also under consideration, he added.
