Six Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders, including Rangpur Medical College unit president and general secretary, have been arrested in connection with Tuesday's attack on a traffic police office.

Kotwali police chief Haider Ali Mollah told reporters that the BCL leaders were arrested on Tuesday night following a case filed after the attack.

The arrestees are Rangpur Medical BCL president Ashraful Haque Khandaker, general secretary Sanjay Sarker and leader Rezwanur Rahman, and Rangpur Government College unit leaders Shafiur Rahman, Yunus Ali and Ahsan Habib.

Haider said a group of BCL activists went on a rampage on the office of the traffic police in the town around 9:15pm after being refused to get back two motorbikes, belonging to two of their leaders, seized earlier on the day.

The BCL men also assaulted the police personnel in the office, he claimed.

RAB and police, in a daylong drive, seized at least 20 motorbikes from the town on Tuesday, Haider said.

After the attack, constable Azazul Haque filed a case against the six leaders and 25-30 of their accomplices, he said.
