Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has laid the foundation stone of the country's first-ever maritime university at Chittagong Marine Academy.

The foundation-laying ceremony was held on Saturday noon.

The university, 'Sheikh Mujib Maritime University', the second of its kind in South Asia, will be set up on a 35-acre of land on the other bank of the Karnaphuli River.

The Tk 2.60-billion university project is expected to be completed by 2013.

Marine cadets will get 'Bachelor of Maritime Science' degrees from the university. Currently, the National University offers such degrees in the country.

Earlier, the prime minister received salutes by the academy's 45th batch students at their passing out parade and distributed medals among 10 best cadets of the batch. Capt Raisul Islam got the gold medal.

Hasina left the academy as she was scheduled to sit with the leaders of Chittagong Awami League's three major units later in the day.

Shipping minister Shajahan Khan and project director and commandant of the academy Sazid Hossain accompanied the prime minister.
