The power secretary has expressed fear that mass agitation could rise in the next few months due to increasing demand for electricity.

"We've three threats ahead of us – for irrigation, SSC exams and the World Cup," Abul Kalam Azad said on Sunday at a meeting with the local representatives and administrative officials at the office of Rangpur deputy commissioner.

He also said that the prevailing power crisis would not be possible to address before 2015.

"During the tenure of the Awami League government, 725MW power could be added, while more 365MW will be added to the national grid before the irrigation season."

Even after such progress, there will be a shortfall of over 2,500MW, he added.

Azad also instructed officials concerned to resume power supply immediately in the area where such agitation rises.

Meanwhile, he also urged all to keep shops shut after 8 pm, adding that "uninterrupted power supply will be ensured from 6 pm to 11 pm during the upcoming irrigation season."
