Nation Observe Poet Sufia Kamal's 11th Death Anniversary PDF Print E-mail

The nation is observing on Saturday the 11th death anniversary of eminent poet Sufia Kamal, who also played a key role in women empowerment in the country.

She was born in Barisal on June 20, 1911 and died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital on November 20, 1999.

Several organisations including Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote and Sufia Kamal Smrity Sangsad are scheduled to pay tribute to the poet by placing wreaths at her grave at Azimpur graveyard on the day.

In addition, various organisations are expected to organise discussions on her life and work.

Sufia kamal was a women-rights campaigner and a leader of different social movements against religious bigotry and communalism.

She also took an active part in language movement, liberation war and anti-autocracy movements.

Her first book of poems, Sanjher Maya, came out in 1938. Among her other notable works are Maya Kajol, Mon O Jibon, Udatto Prithibi and Obhijatrik.

She also wrote quite a number of short stories, including 'Keyar Kanta'.

Kamal was honoured with Bangla Academy Award, Ekushey Padak, Begum Rokeya Padak and Independence Day Award.
