DHAKA: The proceedings of a corruption case against LGRD State Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak will resume as the Supreme Court Tuesday overruled a High Court order that had halted the trial.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque, issued the order of stay on the HC-imposed stay on the case proceedings.    

The apex-court ruling came in response to a leave-to-appeal petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against the HS order of stay. 

With the highest-court order in hand, Anti-Corruption Commission lawyer Advocate MA Aziz Khan told reporters, “The corruption case against State Minister Nanak will now run at the trial court following the Supreme Court order.”

The anti-graft watchdog filed the case against the Juba League chief, Nanak, with Ramna Thana on March 25 in 2008 on a charge of “illegally” amassing wealth worth Tk 1827,109 and concealing the information thereof.

On September 9, 2008, the HC stayed the proceedings of the case following a writ petition filed by Nanak’s wife, Arzuman Ara Banu.

He was among a lot many high-profile persons, including top politicians, sued on graft charges amid a massive anticrime crackdown after the 1/11 changeover following a political crisis over election issues.
