Main opposition BNP has alleged that the cancellation of Arafat Rahman Coco's parole is a ploy by the Awami League-led government against Zia's family, to hide their failure in ruling the country.

Khandaker Mosarraf Hossain, BNP standing committee member, made this allegation at a protest rally, at the capital's Muktangan, organised to voice the party's opposition to the cancellation of Coco's parole.

He also demanded ithe mmediate withdrawal of the cancellation order and Coco's unconditional release.

"The government is carrying on a politics of vengeance against Zia's family. They are creating conspiracies, one after another, to take the people's focus away from other issues," he said.

The senior BNP leader also accused the government of failing to solve people's problems, "rather it has proven its anti-democratic character by putting an embargo on people's fundamental right to arrange meetings and demonstrations."

Hossain criticised different government steps taken to solve the traffic gridlock and the power crisis in the capital, and said none of their measures have proved to be effective.

The military-installed government, that had assumed power in 2007, had released Coco in May 2008 on parole so that he could travel abroad for medical treatment. His parole has been periodically extended since then.

Coco was arrested on Sep 2, 2007, in the GATCO corruption case.

On March 17, 2009, the Anti-corruption Commission filed a money laundering case against him. The case detail said that Coco had laundered around Tk 130m out of the country.
