Open market sale (OMS) of rice was launched on Tuesday to keep rice prices within the reach of the poor people, during the upcoming month of Ramadan.

Food ministry officials said that the sale had started at the in all metropolitan cities and divisional headquarters of the country, including Dhaka, on Tuesday from 10am.

The sale will start at heavy industrial areas on Wednesday.

The project started with 100 trucks at different spots in Dhaka, including Kazipara, Shawrapara, Agargaon, Mirpur-1, Mirpur-10, Lalkuthi, Gabtali, Shankar, Azimpur, Palashi, Mohakhali, Amtali, Rampura Bazar, Badda, Basabo, Goran and Kamlapur.

Sellers have said purchase was low on the first day due to low publicity, however, they hoped that people would response within a few days.

Food minister Abdur Razzaque informed reporters about the open market sale at the Secretariat on Monday.

The minister said the government will also launch distribution of food stuffs before the Eid through VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding) cards. "It will help keep the prices of essentials within people's reach," he claimed.

The government is also arranging to sell rice through the Fair Price Card (FPC) from Aug 16.

Rice will be sold at Tk 24 per kg from the mobile vehicles. People will be able to buy a maximum of five kgs a day, five days a week, under the OMS programme, and a maximum 20 kgs a month under FPC. The sale will continue from 9 am to 7 pm every day, except Fridays and Tuesdays.

Razzaque said that 485 dealers across the country would be involved in the OMS programme, of which 265 will sell rice through trucks.

The dealers using trucks will sell rice only in flood-affected Sylhet, Maulavibazar, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Kishoreganj and Netrakona districts, he added.

There are 140 dealers in Dhaka who will sell rice on trucks, but the number might be increased, if required, said the minister.
