Awami League backed Chittagong mayoral candidate Mohiuddin Chowdhury said he would not tolerate any conspiracy over Chittagong port.

He said, "Extending transit to India does not mean giving it away."

Regarding a previous controversial bid by the little-known Stevedoring Services of America, he said, "I was the first to oppose that move."

Mohiuddin Chowdhury was speaking to journalists after his day's campaign at central office of the Nagorik Committee on Saturday.

The civic committee is the official sponsor of Mohiuddin's candidature for mayor, which would be an unprecedented fourth term in office if he wins the June 17 city corporation polls.

Mohiuddin reassured the journalists that if there were any conspiracy to hand over the port to India, he would once against be the first to oppose the move.

Responding to an allegation over frequent deadlock in Chittagong port, he said, "I never made the port inoperative in the name of movement nor did I fulfill my selfish interest."

"I will not remain silent if anything goes against the workers' interest at Chittagong Port," he said.

After announcement of election schedule, the BNP backed mayoral candidate had alleged that the Chittagong City Corporation was being used as a commercial sector rather than a service sector.

Replying to a query from the journalists, Mohiuddin said, "When I took charge as mayor, the total wages and salaries of the employees was estimated at Tk 86 lakh which has now risen to Tk 6.5 crore."

He said, "But the entire did not come from government allocations. I had to launch different income generating projects."

Mohiuddin Ahmed Chowdhury carried out his campaign at different points of the city.

During the publicity, he spoke of his track record and sought blessings of people and asked for their vote.

Mohiuddin Chowdhury's wife and children also carried out campaigns in different parts of the city.

Mohiuddin's son Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury and his daughters also conducted door to door campaigns.
