Khagrachhari district town wore a deserted look on Wednesday following the imposition of an overnight curfew amid clashes between the indigenous and Bangali settler communities on Tuesday that left one person dead.
Residents did not come out of houses and shops and other establishments remained closed in the morning despite the end of the curfew.
Apart from presence of a large number of police and BDR personnel, as army troops were seen patrolling the town in the morning.
Khagrachhari deputy commissioner Mohammad Abdullah earlier said an overnight curfew was imposed in the town, from 9pm Tuesday to 7am Wednesday, following the Tuesday clashes, sparked by recent violence at Baghaichhari in Rangamati between the tribes and settlers.
One Bangali – Anwar Hossain (28) – was killed, 22 others were injured and several houses torched in Tuesday clashes. Anwar's body was sent to Khagrachhari general hospital for autopsy.
The violence erupted when activists of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) and Parbatya Chattagram Bangali Chhatra Parishad staged demonstrations in the town over the Baghaichhari incidents.
Officials of the district administration said state minister for home affairs Shamsul Haq Tuku would visit Khagrachhara town and Baghaichhari in Rangamati on Wednesday see the situation.
