Over two dozen of Islami Chhatra Shibir's top brass resigned en masse on Monday afternoon following secretary general Abdullah Al Mamun's resignation two days ago.
Mamun told bdnews24.com, "Twenty-five members of the central executive committee resigned late this (Monday) afternoon."
He also said his resignation on Saturday had not been made public at that time.
But Mamun did not elaborate on the reason behind the development. He said that he quit his post citing 'personal grounds'.
However, sources close to the Shibir leadership told bdnews24.com the mass resignation was due to internal rifts over a number of issues, including the recent violence at Rajshahi University and formation of a new executive committee that was due within the next few days.
There was also speculation by some that the top Shibir leadership had fallen out with Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid, the secretary general of their parent party Jamaat-e-Islami, and resigned in protest.
The news comes in one of the worst moments of the party's history as the right-wing Islamist outfit, backed strongly by its loyal student wing, faces a government onslaught over its alleged involvement in the murder of student activists loyal to the ruling party.
A number of top Jamaat leaders and scores of Shibir activists have been rounded up and detained in recent weeks after the killing of a pro-government Bangladesh Chhatra League activist on the Rajshahi University campus during clashes between the two student groups on Feb 8-9.
