Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has said the government is looking at a significant expansion of the Dhaka City Corporation area, and more satellite towns in the suburbs, as part of the capital's 20 year mega-city plan.

The expanded DCC coverage area would take in municipalities of Narayanganj, Tongi, Gazipur, Savar, Kadam Rosul, Siddirganj and Tarabo.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Development Plan (1995-2015) sees the capital eventually covering 1,528 square kms under the city development authority Rajdhani Unnayan Kortiripokkho (Rajuk), the prime minister told parliament during her question time on Wednesday.

She said under the mega-plan, the city corporation would extend along the north all the way to Gazipur municipality, south to Dhaleshwari river, west to Bangshi and Dhaleshwari rivers and east to Shitalakhya river including parts of Sonargaon thana and Meghna river area.

Replying to a question by Gazipur-3 MP Rahmat Ali, the prime minister said the government is considering approval of the detailed area plan.

The government is also planning to build more satellite towns under this project which will be implemented in phases, the PM said.
