Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has dedicated the Indira Gandhi prize she received on Tuesday to the people of Bangladesh.
She made the announcement at a briefing at Zia International Airport on Wednesday on her return from India tour. She received the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development in New Delhi, which carries 25 lakh rupees.
"This award is not mine alone, it is for the people of the country," she said at a media briefing on the four-day visit.
She said the money would go to the Bangabandhu Memorial Trust which gives stipends to some 1500 students every month. A special programme was undertaken to reach health services to people from January 10 this year.
Introduced in 1986, the award has been given to, among others, former UN chief Kofi Annan, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, IAEA chief Mohammad Al Baradei, Nobel laureates Dr Muhammad Younus and Wangari Maathai and Afghan president Hamid Karzai.
