Rapid Action Battalion is seeking to expand its forces with two more battalions, on top of the current 12 each comprising around 800 troops.
The home ministry, after a meeting on Sunday, returned a proposal by the elite crime force, asking it to resubmit it with more details.
State minister for home Shamsul Haq Tuku and RAB director general Hassan Mahmood Khandaker, spoke to reporters after the meeting headed by home minister Sahara Khatun.
The RAB chief said discussions were held on expanding his force. "But directions were given to submit a new proposal after further scrutiny."
"We will move fast regarding this," Khandaker said.
Tuku said the meeting did decide to better equip the police force with modern vehicles, arms and other technical assistance.
"But these matters are not finalised yet. Proposals are asked to be submitted with specifications," he said.
Regarding the proposal by RAB, Tuku said discussions were held but it was not possible to decide.
"We asked them to give the proposal again after revisions," the state minister added.
Ministry officials say RAB, with a current strength of around 10,000 troops, recently sought resources for two new battalions, 13 and 14.
