The High Court has ordered the government to report on progress of the committee formed to monitor the autonomy of government-run television and radio.
Deputy attorney general Nazrul Islam Talukdar told bdnews24.com the bench of justices Syed Rifaat Ahmed and Mainul Islam Chowdhury gave the order after hearing a petition filed by human-rights organisation Adhikar.
The writ appeal said then secretary Asafuddowla made some recommendations on the autonomy of Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar on June 30, 1997.
Adhikar petitioned the High Court in 2000 to order the government to implement the recommendations.
Deputy attorney general Nazrul Islam Talukdar told the court that another committee on the matter, formed on May 24,1999, is now working.
Advocate Adilur Rahman said the High Court needs to know what work the committees did in the last ten years to give direction.
