'Baul Samrat' Shah Abdul Karim's health deteriorated on Friday, his son said.

Shah Noor Jalal told bdnews24.com at 9:30pm that the mystic poet and singer had been put on life support since noon at Noor Jahan Poly Clinic in Sylhet city after his health worsened in the morning.

Karim, 93, was admitted to the clinic on Sept 3.

"He has been suffering from respiratory problems, lung infection and other old-age diseases," Karim's doctor Faisal Ahmed said to bdnews24.com.

Karim was born at Ujandhol village on the bank of the Kalni in Sunamganj on Feb 15, 1916.

He was awarded Ekushey Padak, one of the highest civilian awards in Bangladesh, in 2001.
