The Awami League is preparing to hold the national council by the July 25 deadline set by the Election Commission, the ruling party's office secretary said on Friday.
The party will fix the date at the next meeting of the policymaking presidium likely to be held this week, Abdul Mannan Khan told reporters.
"The Awami League is taking preparations to hold the council before the scheduled time," he said after the presidium meeting at the office of party president Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmandi in the capital.
Deputy leader of parliament Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury presided over the meeting attended by Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta, Kazi Zafar Ullah and Ataur Rahman Khan Kaiser.
"All that is needed [to hold the council] is being done."
"The party constitution that was reformed before the elections will be submitted to the Election Commission after a final approval in the council," added Mannan, also the state minister for housing and public works.
The party presidium on July 4 decided to appeal to the Election Commission to allow it hold the council six months later.
Asked about the issue, he said, "Now it will not be done earlier than planned."
He also said that a delegation composed of presidium members and others would discuss the issue with the Election Commission at 11am on July 16.
The delegation would also try to know what the commission was thinking of other political parties' councils, he further said.
Before the national council is held, the party will form nine organisational district committees that are to see any council, he said.
