The Bangladesh Football Federation on Wednesday expressed their sorrow over the issue of showing disrespect to the national flag during the opening ceremony of the Citycell National School Football Champions finals at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
"To err is human and it happened unconsciously. We apologise for it," said BFF president Kazi Salahuddin after emerging from the BFF emergency committee meeting at BFF House.
The BFF boss said that they had formed a three-member inquiry committee to find out whether there was any motive behind the unwanted incident.
The committee, which included BFF senior vice-president Abdus Salam Murshedi, vice-president Manzoor Hossain Malu and member Harunur Rashid, will submit a report within a week.
Sheikh Mohammad Aslam, the deputy chairman of the school tournament committee, also resigned following the incident that created a strong criticism among the common people.
On Monday, education minister Nurul Islam Nahid unveiled a portrait of the members of the Swadhin Bangla Football Team in a ceremony that involved the national flag being 'cut' into two halves to reveal the portrait.
'The BFF sincerely appologises for what happened with the national flag unconsciously during the opening ceremony of school football final round,' said a BFF statement.
