The government may increase direct tax in the next budget that is being carefully strewn in the aftermaths of global financial meltdown, the finance minister said on Saturday

"Direct tax may see a rise, which will put pressure on 82 products," A M A Muhith said at pre-budget discussion at Jalalabad Gas Transmission & Distribution System Ltd auditorium at Mehendibagh in Sylhet on Saturday.

"We want to make additional income from luxury products."

"Tax is being raised because of circumstances. So every one will have to accept the move," he said

Muhith said revenue earning was projected at Tk 63000 crore in 2008-2009 financial year while it may rise by Tk 20000-25000 crore this fiscal year.

He termed the upcoming budget as the budget of partnership.

"We are stressing more on development of human resources, information technology, industrialisation, energy and power, and agriculture and rural infrastructure," he said

On the empowerment of local government bodies, he said the government wanted the MPs to advise the upazila chairmen.

"But the parliament passed the bill making the upazila chairmen accountable to the MPs," he said

Sylhet divisional commissioner Jafar Ahmed Khan, former Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Faras Uddin, Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Ziaul Haque Khondker also spoke.
