A low over northwest Bay and adjoining areas moved west-northwestwards, the Meteorological Department on Tuesday said in a statement.

The low, intensifying into a monsoon depression, was lying over the northwest Bay and adjacent area off Orissa coast at 6am, about 590 kilometres west-southwest of Chittagong port, 570 kilometres west-southwest of Cox's Bazar port and 390 kilometres southwest of Mongla port.

It is likely to intensify further and move in a northwesterly direction and may cross Orissa coast of India by night. Under its influence steep pressure gradient lies over North Bay, the statement said.

Squally weather may continue to affect the maritime ports and adjoining coastal region of Bangladesh.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 44 km of the depression centre is about 40 km per hour rising to 50 kph in gusts or squalls. The sea will remain moderate.

Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Mongla have been asked to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number 3, it added.

All fishing boats and trawlers over north Bay have been asked to take shelter immediately and remain in shelter until further notice.
